Sugar free dark chocolate finding (Plus: Reminder to always check backs of packets)

SI Pain: 2/100 | Rib Pain: 0/100 | Concrete Back: 9/100

Just a quick entry today.

Everything was fine; it was a beautiful sunny day. I went for two walks and, generally, felt great.

However, I had a slight sensation in my right sacroiliac joint.

This first occurred about 40 minutes after lunch and there was a secondary occurrence when I went for a walk in the evening.

It was only a sensation, not ‘pain’, so I am marking it as a 2 out of 100.

Everything I have ate was on my safe list today, except for some cured meat. It wasn’t something I had bought and I didn’t see what was on the packet.

My assumption is must have contained some kind of preservative or filler like maltodextrin or maize starch. This is relatively common in dried sausage.

I have felt really good otherwise so I think that is the likely culprit.

I have just done my yoga now and I feel okay.

Mini Findings

🎯 Always check backs of packets

This is something I normally always do but you can’t always control this. Even food that looks and tastes like single ingredient food can include preservatives or fillers that might cause a reaction.

If you’re going to all the effort of following a strict diet don’t fall at this hurdle!

🎯 Be careful of these chocolate drops

Another confirmation about the effects that the chocolate drops I have been eating seem to have on my skin (on me at least).

They very specifically seem to flaring up the eczema in my ears.

Dry skin here is something I’ve had since I was a child, but since the AS, it has come back more frequently. It’s interesting to note that certain dietary changes can make it better or worse.

Within a very short period of time after eating these new chocolate drops that I’ve been trying, it gets much worse. I am finding that within about an hour, I am scratching my ear and it feels dry and uncomfortable.

They contain: Organic cocoa mass, organic coconut sugar (33%) organic cocoa butter only so should be fine (and don’t cause any other pain) but they are obviously causing some kind of reaction.

So, that is an interesting finding. Sadly, I think I have to take this really nice chocolate off my treat list for now.

Again, I’ve mentioned this in the diary so apologies if all you’re seeing is repetition. I tend to like to make confirmations and repeat findings just to be sure.

I think that’s it for today. I’m hoping I feel normal again tomorrow and I’m looking forward to quite a quiet weekend.
